Thanks must go to Traci Whifield for the time she spent organising and looking after the team. Also, for sending the details for this report.

The 2009 Under 9 team

Last year, the Staffordshire Under 9 team went to Nottingham for the EPSCA Northern Zone Championships and finished 5th. Could they do even better this year?

On Saturday March 13, this year's northern zone championships were again held at Nottingham High School. Like last year, the "Staffordshire" team included the top 14 players from the combined Birmingham and Staffordshire areas. The team that went to Nottingham were:

Aloysius Lip

Ashwin Kalyana

Matthew Fergusson

Eddie Tracis

Jivan Mann

James Draper

Aaron Vitarana

Vishal Aurora

Andre German

Daniel Holland

Skye Wiggins

Jacob Boswell

Amil Mohammed

Aroun Kalyana

Those players were selected because of their performance in school, local and national competitions.

Staffordshire's under 9 team

The team just after the players had been presented with their bronze medals.

In Nottingham, our team gave an outstanding performance and the standard of play was very high - particularly on the top three boards. During the championships every player scored at least one point and James Draper achieved a perfect score of 3 wins from 3 games.

The team finished with a total score of 22 points out of 36, securing third place. Bronze medals were presented to every player on the team. Finishing third means the team has qualified for the finals in Northampton. Those finals will be held on 25 April, and every one of those bronze medal winning players has been invited to play.
