Good result for U100 B

29 Nov
Despite fielding a team that included three last minute substitutes, and defaulting one board, Traci's U100 B team finished with a very respectable 5½ - 6½ against Shropshire last weekend. Well done!

U100 B do well

17 Oct
This season, the U100 B team started their season with a day trip to Redditch in Worcestershire. Although they were outgraded on 10 of the 12 boards, the team scored a creditable 5 - 7, with some very good results.

For their next match, the team will make the much shorter trip to neighbouring Shropshire.

Return of the B team

10 Oct
Last season, Traci Whitfield entered a team for the first time in the MCCU's Inter-County tournament. Half the team in each match were junior players (aged under 18). It proved so popular, that she will be running the team again this season.

This season, there are three fixtures and again, half of each team will be junior players - so that they can gain experience from playing events like this. Each team will include 12 players - six adults and six juniors.

Well done, and thank you!

8 Oct
Congratulations to the winners, and well done to everyone who took part in today's 2006 Junior Congress in Stafford. A full report on events will be posted in the next few days.

Secondly, on behalf of everyone there, I must congratulate both Traci and Graham for all the time and trouble they both went to in organising and running such a successful tournament. It was obvious from the number of people taking part and the pleasure they seemed to derive from it, that the event can be recorded as a complete success. Thank you Traci, thank you both!

Thanks must go to the arbiters, who gave their time to organise and look after each group. Thanks also to everyone involved in keeping the competitors fed and watered. Last (but by no means least), thanks to everyone who helped set out the tables etc, and tidy up afterwards.

Thank you everyone. Without you, it wouldn't have been such a success.

Staffordshire Junior Congress 2006

22 Sept
The 2006 Staffordshire Junior Chess Congress will be held on Sunday 8th October in Stafford.

Open to players aged under 18, entries will be divided into eight seperate age groups, ranging from under 8, to under 18.

Please note that for players under 12, this is now a qualifying tournament for the London Junior Chess Championship (LJCC). Above this age, qualification is not needed. Details of the LJCC will be available for you to pick up on the day if you qualify and wish to go on to the finals.

Player of the year

17 June
Well done Craig Whitfield, Staffordshire´s "Player of the Year" for 2006.

In local chess, Craig helped his team finish first in its division by winning more games than he lost this season. In national chess, he was best under 11 in the 2005 terrafinal of the UK Chess Challenge, finishing in 7th place. Craig has also been to France and the Czech Republic, to play for England.

Well done Craig!

U125 team beaten by youngsters

1 Feb
Traci's team competed in the Inter-County tournament for players graded under 100. In the semi-final of the section for players graded under 125, Staffordshire's team have just been beaten by a team from Nottinghamshire. The Nottinhamshire team included several youngsters - and only one of them lost!

U100 decider - 13 January

27 Nov
Both Traci's team and our U100 A team have both played two matches so far this season.

On both occasions, the two teams ended sharing the same scoreline: In their first matches, they both ended with 7 - 5 losses against their respective opponents; and in their second, they both ended with 6½ - 5½ losses.

Any suggestions what the result might be when they finally face each other on 13 January?

Newcastle-Under-Lyme Junior Chess Club

22 Sept
By Traci Whitfield
Hi Everyone
I am attaching a flyer for the Newcastle Under Lyme Junior Chess Club. It will be held on Thursday evenings, initially 6-7pm in Newcastle. We have started it because we realise that some schools don't have their own club and junior players don't have anywhere to go to play, learn or improve their chess.

It starts 4th October 2006.

Take a look at the flyer. If you could print some copies and put a couple up at school or in your local post office or email them to friends it would be really appreciated.

Please give your head teacher a copy too.

Of course, if you are a parent, chess friend, organiser or teacher reading this, any publicity you could give would be welcomed too.

Many thanks

U11s reach EPSCA final

29 Apr
Well done to the players who helped the U11 County junior team reach the national finals for the first time. In their qualifying match on March 18, the team came 4th, being pipped to the bronze medal position by ½ point! The top 4 boards were stunning, out of a possible 12 points they scored 11½ points. Not even the phenomenally strong Yorkshire team managed that!

So the team are off to London for the final on May 13th.

Staffs B lose to Shropshire

15 Jan
In their third match, Staffordshire B faced visitors from Shropshire. There were an equal number of younger players on both teams, gaining experience from the event. Although the younger players on our team scored as many points as they lost, the match as a whole was won by Shropshire 7 - 5. Nearly everyone seemed to enjoy the experience.

Unfortunatly, the team did not finish high enough to continue, so the teams season is now complete. The season seemed to be enjoyed by all concerned, but a survey is currently being taken to help decide what to do with the team next season.

Well done, and thank you, to everyone involved.
